10 Cheap and Easy Ways to Lower Your Energy Bill This Winter

Winter is a high energy use time period due to many things like holiday lights, increased time spent indoors, and cold temperatures.  For the family who is concerned about their energy consumption, here are some easy and affordable ways to reduce it.

  1. Caulk and/or weather strip your windows, doors, ceiling fixtures, outlets and other small areas that could be leaking air.
  2. Check your appliances – the numbers vary, but close to 30-40% of your households electricity use could be coming from your appliances.  (Turn your refrigerator to 37 degrees, use the air dry function on your dishwasher, wash clothes on warm instead of hot, etc.)
  3. Clean or replace air filters on items like air conditioners and furnaces.
  4. Using fluorescent bulbs can create a big impact over time.
  5. Insulate your crawl space and/or attic.
  6. Install a cover on your kitchen exhaust fan.
  7. Buy an electric thermostat – this allows you to set the temperature to a certain degree during the day, and a lower one at night or when away from your home for longer periods.  Remember to maintain at least 55 degrees of temperature in your home to prevent pipes from freezing or breaking.
  8. Unplug appliances and other electrical items when not in use.
  9. Set Christmas and exterior lights to a timer.  This will prevent you from forgetting to turn these items off before going to bed at night.
  10. Do a home energy audit – many counties and cities participate in programs that allow residents to do this very inexpensively.  This is a good way to find out where bigger improvements could be made to your home.  The inspectors are usually good about pointing out where rebates are available and where you will get the biggest bang for your buck.
