The nice weather has finally reached us, and that means it’s time to dust off that outdoor sporting equipment, get outside, and enjoy this weather with a little outdoor exercise. Marquette provides no shortage of ways to stay active in the summer. Here are a few simple reminders to help you stay safe and healthy while out and enjoying the season!
Stay Cool and Hydrated
While biking, walking, running, kayaking or whatever activity you choose, it’s important to stay hydrated. When you are dehydrated, your heart has to work harder to pump blood through your body. This can be especially dangerous for individuals with high blood pressure or other cardiovascular conditions. While water is usually your best option, milk and juice will also help you stay hydrated. Consider adding water to juice to dilute the sugar content.
Keep in mind, alcohol is a dehydrator. If you are going to say cheers to summer, be sure to keep sipping water to counter the dehydrating effects of alcoholic beverages.
Protect Yourself from Overexposure
You’ve heard it from your mom and you will hear it from me! Put on sunscreen. I know, “But I look so much better with a tan.” This summer, let’s make your skin’s health a priority. Sunscreen helps protect against sunburn and the harmful effects of UV that can lead to more serious skin damage such as melanoma. While layering on the sunscreen, throw on a hat and sunglasses. With all these layers, no one will even notice that you don’t have a tan.
Nutrition is in Season
Fruits, fruits, and more fruits! Don’t forget to include some veggies here and there. This is the best time to get fresh organic strawberries and all those other summertime fruits and veggies! Also, did you know many fruits can help you stay hydrated? Along with essential vitamins, many fruits such as watermelon, grapefruit, and oranges contain significant amounts of water which will help keep you hydrated. Want to be wild and crazy? Take that bottle of water and throw some fresh cut fruit in there. BAM! You just amped up your water. Brilliant, right? You’re welcome.
Give Me That Vitamin
Taking in a little extra support will help you with your physical activity this summer. The B complex vitamin will help you stay active while calming your nervous system and help with cellular energy production. Taking all of those Flintstone vitamins as a kid got you into some good habits!
Enjoy the Experience
It’s easy to miss the beautiful environment while biking or running. Relax and take in your surroundings. Truly experience the outdoors. But before you do, stop to be sure you find a spot under a tree or a nice shaded area. Remember, just because I am telling you to stop and enjoy doesn’t mean you can slack on the other tips. Don’t overexpose yourself to that sun!
