You own a business, and you want to start contracting out some of your hauling and logistics to a local trucking company. You reach out to several companies to get quotes, but you want more information on who you are going to be in business with. You really want to see how the companies stack up against each other in terms of safety, but are not sure where to find that information?
Well, you are in luck! The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) operates, and maintains, a website where the public can research basic information about any registered motor carrier company in the United States – SAFER.
SAFER? Yes, SAFER, or the “Safety and Fitness Electronic Records (SAFER) System offers company safety data and related services to industry and the public over the internet” (https://safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/).
SAFER allows industry members and the public to research a motor carrier’s safety profile through the use of the “Company Snapshot”. While in the company snapshot an individual can see multiple pieces of information about a particular carrier such as:
- Operation classification (if they are authorized for hire or not)
- Carrier operations (authorized for interstate, or intrastate travel only)
- Cargo carried (what the carrier is allowed to haul)
The Company Snapshot on SAFER will also provide a basic safety profile of the company you are researching. It will show number and type of inspections the carrier has had within the last 24 months, as well as the number and type of crashes the motor carrier has been involved in (if any) within the last 24 months.
The SAFER website is a good tool to conduct a high level overview of your potential trucking partner.
If you have any questions about the SAFER website, or how to use it, please contact your insurance agent.
