The New Employee Experience

Starting a new career can be daunting; often times doing so can induce rapid heartbeats, nervousness, excess sweating, even anxiety.  Most people begin looking for long-term careers in their 20s.  It’s been said that this working generation switches careers or career paths six to ten times throughout life.  To me, that seems like a lot of change.  And change can be scary!  Common questions people ask themselves when considering making a career move are:

  • How will I make more money?
  • How will I become secure?
  • How will I make my family secure?

When I was new to the workforce, I often looked for opportunities to grow inside my chosen career path.  When that was no longer a viable option for my life desires, I knew I had to look elsewhere.  That’s how I found and fell in love with VAST.

Walking in the door on my first day was indeed daunting.  I had butterflies in my stomach at the thought of meeting a large group of people and basically hitting “restart” on my career in my mid-30s.  However, soon I saw that I had no reason to worry.  VAST had the most welcoming first week for a new employee that I could possibly imagine.  And now, 2 weeks in, the welcoming impression hasn’t stopped!

Some advice I can offer to anyone beginning a new career, or a new position with a current employer is:

  • Be positive! I know it’s easy and natural to worry, but walking in with a smile and can-do attitude helps to shape your first impression and future relationships with your new team.
  • Have confidence, but not arrogance. It’s important to be honest about who you are and what you want, but it’s also important to be open to learning new (and sometimes better) ways to accomplish objectives.
  • Have fun – but keep it professional. Aim to develop positive professional relationships with your coworkers and leaders.  You will enjoy life much more when you have fun at work.
  • Most importantly – be that shining star they hired. They hired (or promoted) you for who you are and what you bring to the table.  Keep it up!

Although I have only worked at VAST for a short while, I am thrilled to be part of this great team, and I am looking forward to a long and productive career here!
