How Regular Exercise Impacts Workplace Performance

When we think of exercise, usually the first things that come to mind are improving our physique and bettering our health. A regular exercise program can lower blood pressure, improve cardiovascular health, and improve confidence and self-esteem.  Another benefit of exercise that people don’t always realize is that it improves the way we think. This has a direct translation to how we perform in the workplace!

Studies indicate that our brain firepower is directly linked to our regular physical routine. Regular exercise has the following cognitive benefits: improved concentration, sharper memory, faster learning, prolonged mental stamina, enhanced creativity, and lower stress. All of these benefits are key components of an ideal employee and colleague. Exercise also elevates the mood. Can you imagine the productivity of a workforce where everyone included a fitness regimen into their daily lives?  It could take a company to the next level!

There is also evidence that exercise during the workday may boost performance as well! People reported being more productive at work on days they partook in a physical activity during the workday. They managed their time more effectively, had better interactions with their co-workers, and left the workday feeling satisfied and accomplished.

Usually the main reason why people don’t actively partake in an exercise regimen is because they don’t feel they have the time. It’s about creating the time. Find something you love and enjoy, that can be your own personal outlet. The benefits of exercise are endless! While a normal physical regimen cannot be a requirement of employment, exercise can be encouraged and rewarded.  VAST encourages a healthy lifestyle regimen where we as employees can participate in a portal called Motivation Alliance, where we can earn points for tracking our physical activity, diet, personal health goals, and hours of sleep. We are rewarded for the points we earn in gift cards to area stores that sell products or offer services related to health and wellness. Also in the top tier of points, we can earn a half day of paid time off! It is a great program that many of the employees here at VAST take advantage of, and encourage one another to use. Today, think of how exercise can or already does impact your life in a positive way!
